Back in the hunt, Tiger shows little rust in '08 debut

This time around, he might feel the whole haymaker.
custom playing cards months ago, the largely unheralded Matteson played in the final
round of the Buick Invitational alongside eventual winner Tiger Woods
and got streetwear fashion witness first-hand the world poker cards 1's third consecutive
victory at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Woods wobbled here and there, but by the time it was over, he had
surged past everybody, including Matteson and the third member of the
group, Charles Howell, to deliver yet another of his 61 chinese chicago victories. They began the day tied for fourth, though Matteson shot 76

But Howell was hanging tough. As the trio played the final hole,

eventually finished second.
"Charles just goes, 'You know what, just when you think he's going to
let you in, he just puts you away,'" Matteson recalled. Matteson shot
a stellar 7-under 65 on the brutish South Course on emo fashion to take
the first-round lead at Torrey, but darned if that Tiger cat isn't
right on his rear end again.
Making his 2008 debut, Woods shot an opening 67 on the South and is
tied for third with three others, including his favorite foil from
2007, Rory Sabbatini.
So much for residual rust. Hey, what's playing cards big deal about a 130-day
layoff, anyway?
Woods hadn't played an official PGA Tour round since Sept. 16, and
there were some early kinks, but he soon fell back into step with his
seven-win season of '07, which ended with back-to-back blowout wins in
Chicago and Atlanta.
He had to get his golfing sea legs back, sort of.
"We're not used to, back home at Isleworth, walking," he laughed of
his home track in Orlando, where he tools around in a golf cart with
customized TW chrome rims. "That was a little different. You hit a bad
shot, just drop one down and off we go again. It's a little different
deal (here)."
Yeah, they count every shot. And the way he started, it looked like
his arithmetic tally would be pretty high. Daunting as a 67 sounds in
his first outing of the year, emo clothes did it despite hitting just 7 of 14
fairways on a course that will host the U.S. Open in five months. If
he can get the ball in the fairway, he'll run away with his sixth
Buick Invitational title.
For those who thought he might get fat and sloppy in the offseason, no
such luck.

71. "He's just so comfortable here. It's like he just aims and pulls

He was in fighting trim, to be sure. Woods, who spent hours in the
offseason hitting the weight room, walked onto the first tee dressed
in a form-fitting black turtleneck that looked like it had been
spray-painted on him. A jet roared overhead from the nearby naval base
and a rainbow appeared over the gleaming Pacific Ocean on the second

welcome reprieve for some. It was noted Thursday that all of the news
in golf this month had been bad -- the Golf Channel lynching comment,
the ensuing Golfweek magazine controversy, the uproar by tour players

was finally back on golf.
That sentiment lasted, oh, about an hour, until Sabbatini joined Woods

Both finished their rounds within minutes of one another, so Woods was

the media center. As Woods entered the interview room, Sabbatini
passed within two feet on his way out the door -- with neither

season opener that he was boycotting the media this year because he
believes he's been unfairly treated with regard to his many
Woods-related remarks of late, relented.
He was, not surprisingly, soon asked about the status of his
relationship with Woods, who was upset when Sabbatini withdrew from
his Target World Challenge charity event in December.
"As far as I understand, there's no animosity," Sabbatini said. house insurance both competitors and we both want to win. That's the situation."
